Guggenheim named president of Patterson Dental
St. Paul, Minn.-based Patterson Dental announced that president Scott Anderson will succeed retiring James W. Wiltz as president and CEO of Patterson Companies, Inc. Anderson named Paul Guggenheim as the next president of the company’s dental business effective at the start of the new fiscal year in May. Guggenheim, who currently manages Patterson’s Southwest Region, has held various distinguished leadership posts in the dental supply industry for over 25 years, including president of Guggenheim Brothers Dental Supply (Hawthorne, Calif.). Guggenheim has held numerous influential leadership roles in the dental industry over the years, including Chairman of the Board of the Dental Trade Alliance (Arlington, Va.), president of the Dental Dealers of America (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Chairman of the American Dental Cooperative (Nashville, Tenn.).
Benco Dental acquires Dental Design & Supply Co.
Wilkes-Barre, Pa.-based Benco Dental announced plans to acquire Dental Design & Supply Co. (Tucson, Ariz.), a full-service distributor, in early 2010. Employees will be retained by Benco to serve the Arizona region. Dental Design and its president, Rick Rogers, have been serving the southern Arizona area for 26 years.
American Dental Cooperative adds new members
Nashville, Tenn.-based American Dental Cooperative (ADC) announced three new members: Livonia, Mich.-based Sunshine Medical and Dental Supply, Fairfield, N.J.-based IQ Dental Supply (IQ), and Hawthorne, Calif.-based Esperanza Dental Supply, LLC. Sunshine Medical and Dental operates a hand piece repair business in addition to being a supplier. Esperanza Dental operates out of a new distribution facility and provides dental merchandise to the southern California area. Sergey Kunin is the CEO of IQ Dental Supply and has over 14 years experience in dental distribution. The distributors will now have access to the Quala Brand of dental products, exclusive to ADC members.
‘Have you smiled at your soldier today?’
Since the beginning of December, if you were to drive the streets and highways of Columbus, Ga., you might see billboards proclaiming messages such as "Unbreakable Crown," "Change Your Smile, Change Your Life," and "Have you smiled at your soldier today?" Visitors to the Midwinter Meeting in Chicago and the Hinman in Atlanta are apt to see them as well. What makes the billboards unique is that they were posted not by a dentist, but by a dental lab, The Lab 2000, whose owner, Dena Lanier, was featured in "The Evolution of Lab" in October 2009 First Impressions. "I did it to promote the industry," she says. Results? "My daughter went to her dentist, who told her to tell me that a lot of [the dentist’s] patients are coming in and asking about the billboards," says Lanier. Lanier signed a contract with CBS Outdoor for six months, but "I don’t think I’ll stop" after that, she says.
